India, the world's second-biggest grower of rice and wheat, is all set to harvest record crops after above average rainfall and better seeds boosted yields, helping the government curb the high inflation.

According to reports received from various parts of the country, India will produce over 3 million MT more rice in the next crop season following a huge increase in acreage.

Area under rice cultivation in India was 5.60 million hectares till July 7, up 18.9% from 4.71 million hectares a year ago. The sowing of rice takes place in June and July in India, and the harvest is in October.

Area under cultivation is likely to be higher as good prices received by farmers for rice have led to diversion of some sugarcane and cotton area to rice this year.
