The Jamaican government has decided to import 30,000 MT of rice into the island nation, as part of moves to stave off a shortage in the supply of the staple. According to Minister of Industry, Commerce and Investment, Hon. Karl Samuda, Guyana has been supplying Jamaica with rice for a number of years but its supply chain has been very challenging. Minister Samuda indicated that the matter will go before the CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) meeting next month and his government will go all out to argue their case. He said the move to obtain rice from a source other than Guyana, is in the best interest of consumers. |
