According to the Indian Agricultural minister, India's local rice purchases by state-run agencies so far in 2008-09 (April-March) is estimated to be around 22 million MT despite not taking winter sown rice into consideration.

Rice procurement during the same period a year earlier was 21.2 million MT, he added.
