Malaysian government has decided to initiate plans to increase food security by growing rice on a massive scale amid fears of domestic shortages caused by the recent global food crisis.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced that rice cultivation on a massive scale would be taken up in Sarawak state on Borneo Island, making the state the new "rice bowl" of the country.

Malaysia produces 65% to 70% of the rice its people consume.
