Chicago Board of Trade rice futures surged Thursday on strong commercial buying interest and ongoing concerns about tight world supplies.

May rice jumped 40 1/2 cents to $21.10 1/2 per cwt, a record high close for the nearby contract. November rice finished 34 cents higher at $19.94.
