Guyana is considering a proposal to limit its rice exports in order to meet domestic demands amid pressure from foreign markets struggling with a worldwide grain shortage.

Guyana is among the largest rice producers of rice in the Caribbean, and now countries ranging from Panama to Senegal want to buy more.

Guyana exported 269,000 Mt of rice last year, a third of it to Jamaica and most of the rest to the E.U. Local consumption accounts for about 360,000 MT a year.
