In an effort to boost development of Basmati varieties and promote trade, the government of India is considering a proposal to widen the definition of Basmati rice.

The proposal seeks to declare all varieties of Basmati Rice notified as Basmati Rice under the Seeds Act, 1966. It also wants any future variety notified as Basmati under the same law construed as Basmati Rice.
