Chicago Board of Trade rice futures settled sharply higher in modest trading Wednesday as local short covering and thin fund buying helped boost prices.

May rice rallied 25 cents to $10.05 per hundredweight and November also jumped 25 cents, to $10.94. Activity was light and two-sided early in the session with Man Financial's commercial desk a modest buyer of futures and bought calls while selling puts,supporting the market.
