The government of Costa Rica after evaluating the rice production costs and of the different stages of commercialization of the cereal decreed an increase in prices of 13 cents by each 2 kilos of grain.

The president of the National Rice Corporation (Conarroz), said: "We think that the increase does not compensate the rise that has been done in costs of raw materials, public services and production, for that reason we asked the Government to do pertinent changes to fit prices before leaves all the domestic production".

The Ministry of Economy Industry and Trade (MEIC) said that every three or four months, costs will be updated.

Costa Rica is the second rice consumer in Central America. The consumption per capita is of 53 kilos per year.
