New Basmati varieties a breakthrough in 13 years

The scientists of Rice Research Institute at Kala Shah Kaku in Pakistan would complete commercial testing of two new varieties of Basmati rice, developed at the institute, in next two years. Rice stakeholders termed it a major breakthrough, as it has been almost 13 years since the institute developed a rice variety. The scientists of Kala Shah Kaku announced the development of new rice verities at a seminar recently concluded at the institute. The seminar was attended by a large number of rice stakeholders including representatives of Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock, growers, millers, huskers, besides representatives of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP). The scientists assured participants that two new varieties were in testing phase and these would be available for commercial testing within next two years.
