British Scientists in the laboratories of the company Syngenta biotechnology, have developed a new improved rice of the variety of rice genetically modified denominated "golden rice" that has 20 times more beta carotene than a normal variety.

The beta carotene is a substance that needs the body to produce vitamin A. This new type of GM rice could help to diminish the lack of vitamin A to reduce blindness of children. According to the World Health Organization, every year near 500,000 children remain blind by vitamin A deficiency.

Syngenta is providing free samples of the new variety to Asian research centres that in the case of receiving the authorization of their governments would begin experimental tests.
