Panama: Authorities affirm there is not rice shortage

Farming Authorities of Panama affirmed that there is not rice and maize shortage in the domestic market.

According to the Ministry of Farming Development (MIDA), measures were taken to avoid that the increased its price as it is happening at the moment in the international market.

Panama bought 1.4 million QM of rice in October of 2006. The grain will enter the country in April. The supplying of rice is guaranteed at local level and there is no reason to increases prices.

The consumption of rice in Panama is highest of Central America with 154 pounds per capita.
