Thailand will hold auctions Feb. 13 to sell 283,000 MT of rice from government stocks, a senior official at the Commerce Ministry said Thursday.

The auctions are aimed to ease tight supply following complaints by exporters of inadequate rice volumes for exports, Apiradi Tantraporn, director general of the Commerce Ministry's Foreign Trade Department.

The Thai government will auction 183,000 MT of 2004/2005 B grade 100% jasmine fragrant rice for sale on the domestic market or for export.

It will also auction 100,000 MT of 5% broken white rice from the 2005/2006 crop year solely for export.

The jasmine fragrant rice will be sold in baht, while the white rice for export will be sold in either baht or U.S. dollars.
