
Mexico: Resources to protect grain

The rice producers of Mexico need resources and supports valued in 200 million pesos*, to protect Mexican rice in front foreign product competition.
The National Federation of Rice Producers informed that before the opening of the Treaty of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2008 for farming sector, resources have been requested to the federal House of Representatives to protect products.
Nevertheless rice sector has free commerce since 2002 and must protect the cereal consuming first national production and then imports.
The sector must face rice imports competition from countries where this cereal is highly subsidized.
Rice producers asked to the Secretariat of Agriculture to supports a new technological system to obtain a reduction in production costs of between 25 and 30% and by increasing yield.
Mexico consumes 1 million MT of rice approximately, produces 280,000 MT being a necessary to import 800,000 MT.
