Mexico: Can Increase Rice Seeded Area

In Mexico rice cultivated area in the state of Jalisco reaches only 1.120 hectares with a production of 4.500 MT.

It is expected that Jalisco will increase its rice acreage using fields which at present are cultivated with sugar cane, since it is more profitable due to the limit of tariff protection of the cane, according to agreements of Free Trade Agreement of North America (TLCAN).

The annual demand of rice in Mexico is of 950,000 MT, whereas the national production reaches between 340,000 and 380,000 MT. Mexico imports 500,000 MTof rice per year.

Rice producing states of the country are: Veracruz, Logwood, Sinaloa, and Morelos where the famous rice of "Morelos" is cultivated.
