Thailand: Rice Scammers Cover Their Tracks
Posted on Monday, June 13 @ 05:56:19 CDT by Oryzanews

Thai RiceThai Rice

Over the past weeks newspaper headlines in Thailand have been screaming about rumours of corruption found in the government-sponsored price interference programme, which was set up to benefit rice farmers.

Thai government has expressed its resentment over the published stories and is showing no reluctance in calling for inquiries and investigations. Committees have already been appointed to look for the dishonest brokers. Such allegations are becoming an annual phenomenon, something very usual during this particular time of the year, after the rice harvest season, when the new annual rice growing season is about to begin.

The government's price interference programme, of which the rice mortgage scheme is a part, is designed to help farmers get a better price for the product. The apparent non-transparency in the implementation of the price interference programme is always called into question. Yet there never seems to be any clear proof of corruption when the criticisms start to show up in the press.

Express your opinion in poll.
