Mexico: Imports 800,000 MT of rice annually

As per a report denominated "Industry of rice in crisis", the 80% of local consumption in Mexico is supplied with imported rice. Mexico imports 800,000 MT of rice.

Rice exporters, processors and dealers have to assure that grain is free from transgenic. Nevertheless in Mexico are not made rigorous examinations by a deficiency of coordination between the secretaries of the Ministries of Agriculture, Health and Treasury.

As per the report, in 2006, U.S.A. recognized that the commercial rice in Mexico was altered with experimental transgenic grain LL-601 from Bayer Company.

Greenpeace asked to Mexican authorities the diffusion of the controls that are made on rice.
