The Philippines may import 1.8 million MT of rice this year from 1.65 million MT in 2006, the spokesman of the government's grains trading arm said on Tuesday.

"Because of the calamities last year and the El Nino this year, we may increase it (imports) from last year's 1.65 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes in 2007," Rex Estoperez, spokesman of the National Food Authority, told reporters.
