India, Pakistan Agree To Jointly Patent Basmati Rice

India and Pakistan agreed on Tuesday to jointly patent a popular variety of aromatic basmati rice.

The officials proposed that a sub-group of experts convene to discuss the matter and suggest steps for the registration of the brand worldwide.

"Basmati rice is from both sides an important issue from international point of view... and we should see to that our interests, both Pakistan and India, are taken care of by adequate protection," India's commerce ministry secretary told announced in Islamabad.

A U.S. firm had patented three varieties of long-grain Basmati rice in 1997, and sold rice under its brandnames, but the issue has irked South Asian farmers.
