The Indonesian government is closely monitoring the international rice prices keeping a keen eye at the possibility of illegal rice imports caused by a decline in the price of rice in the international market.

According to Agriculture Department’s domestic marketing director Gardjita Budi, the Agriculture Department has made an effort to increase national rice production and productivity.

The world price of rice reached its highest record last May but declined in August. The highest decline between 36.7 – 39.8 % happened to Vietnam rice. Thai rice also suffered a 18,25 % decrease. Second grade Thai white rice category fell 24,3 % from US$ 963 PMT in May to US$ 787 PMT in August.
