The Government of Uganda has embarked on a $3.18m project with funding and technical support from the Japanese government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in order to increase its domestic rice production.

The senior agricultural officer in-charge of irrigation, Frank Akena, said the project would save farmers from digging trenches for drainage and address environmental degradation. The project will involve proper use of wetlands in 22 districts in eastern Uganda.
