Vietnamese Rice Growers May Farm Rice in Sierra Leone - Will the Nation Mirror Vietnam’s Own Production Success?

By Oryza News on October 21,2011

Major Vietnamese rice producers are looking at entering the Sierra Leone agribusiness industry, according to the Sierra Leone Minister of Agriculture.  Last month, a team of Vietnamese investors and technical advisors visited Sierra Leone to conduct feasibility studies.  They determined that “Sierra Leone has the right environment and climate for massive rice production” to match what they are doing now in Vietnam. The team is also looking at farming rubber.

The Vietnamese team included experts in agriculture, irrigation engineering, aquaculture, and international trade cooperation.  The team has drawn up a Memorandum of Understanding and next year a bigger team will start work on projects identified in the recent visit.  Sierra Leone is working with the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for technical help and support.

No investment or production figures have been given, but officials at FAO say that Sierra Leone may be embarking on a period of large scale rice production similar to that in Vietnam after the war in that country.  In the 1960s and 1970s, Vietnam produced about 6 to 7 million tons of rice, basis milled. Since then, production has increased fourfold to about 26 million tons, basis milled.

Sierra Leone currently produces about 480,000 tons of rice annually, basis milled.  It also imports about 80,000 tons per year.
