Iraq receives imports of wheat and rice

A high ranking source at the Iraqi Trade Ministry said on Thursday that Iraq has received 50 thousand tons of American wheat and 29 thousand tons out of 150 thousand tons of Thai rice contracted on before. The source said that Iraq is also expecting to obtain another 150 thousand tons of American and Canadian wheat later in May and that 32 thousand tons of Thai rice on its way to Iraq and will arrive soon.


He said: "The ships are on their way and we bought larger quantities, but we can not reveal them till the ships transporting them move; however, everyone knows that we need about 340 thousand tons of wheat per month".
 
The source mentioned that Iraq had bought 1 million tons of American wheat and 400 thousand tons of Canadian wheat between January and March. He added, "We always say in our presentations that we will deal with all companies, but so far the best offers we have received were from the Americans and Canadians".
