Mexico want to interpose a demand to the World Trade Organization (WTO) against United States by the subventions that grants to rice which affects Mexican rice farmers. The rice producers of Mexico demand that the subsidies granted to American rice unmark them of the possibility of competing.
The president of the National Union of Rice Producers of Mexico declared: "The production has devastated us". He added that before the opening of the Free Trade Agreement, Mexico use to produce 450,999 MT of rice and at the moment only 280,000 MT. The present production in Mexico represents a 30% of the internal demand (which is of approximately 1 million MT). The rest (70%), almost is imported from U.S.A. Mexico had applied tariffs antidumping on the grain length grain coming from U.S.A. but a panel of WTO considered them unjust in 2005.
