India Tightens Non Basmati Export Ban

By news desk on February 11,2008

After relaxing the export ban initially under pressure from farmers and exporters, the India government has finally tightened the ban on export of non-basmati rice by prohibiting export under transitional arrangements.

India's central government had banned export of non-basmati rice from the country in October last year to shore up local supplies. But it had allowed exports against valid letters of credit so exporters could honor prior commitments.

Under the new order, even exporters with valid letters of credit won't be allowed to export non-basmati rice from India.
