Global Food Situation Demands Attention: IRRI

By news desk on September 22,2008

According to the International Rice Research Institute, IRRI, sagging farm productivity and increasing global demand have brought the world to a crossroads in terms of food security and  failure to act now could lead to a long-term global crisis.

IRRI has also called on the world's governments to reinvest in agriculture including research into improved technologies, infrastructure development, as well as training and education of agricultural scientists.

IRRI's warning coincided with the release of a report by the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization that said higher food prices are partly to blame for the number of hungry people growing by 75 million to about 925 million worldwide.
