Italian Rice In EU Protected Foods List

By news desk on August 21,2007

The European Commission has added a type of Italian rice to its list of roughly 800 products that are protected due to unique geographical associations.

This classification means that similar products from other parts of Europe or anywhere else in the world can't be sold with labels or associations linked to Italy's "Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese."

The U.S. and Australia have however claimed that protecting products linked to specific places violates World Trade Organization rules barring trade discrimination.
