Civil employees of the governments of Surinam and Guyana asked for a right international trade for rice producers and a greater access to the markets. Representatives of both countries have met with a delegation of the European Commission. The debate has been centred in a greater commercial cooperation with Europe and proposals appeared to improve the Caribbean rice industry, to increase their competitiveness and to facilitate beneficial interchanges for the Caribbean countries.

Guyana and Surinam are the greater rice producers among the 15 countrie members of the Community of the Caribbean (Caricom). Caricom groups Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominican, Granada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Sant Kitts and Nevis, Santa Lucia, San Vicente and the Granadinas, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
