Sri Lanka: Rice yield per hectare increased to 4.0 MT

Sri Lanka has been able to reach near self-sufficiency in rice with an increase in rice production at 4 MT per hectare.

The development of high yielding rice varieties has helped the country to reduce imports. To increase agricultural employment to at least 4 times the present rate to increase productivity of this sector.

Overall productivity of the agricultural sector in the past 20 years has been unsatisfactory. As a result of this, the country has been importing food at a tremendous cost to the economy.
