Philippines Hopeful Of Signing Rice Deal With Japan

Philippines Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap has revealed that the Philippines expected to sign a deal with Japan for the import of rice in the near future.

Yap had earlier said the Philippines had obtained a commitment to obtain 60,000 MT of rice from Japan, but didn't provide any reason for the reduction in volume.

In March, the Philippines signed a rice supply deal with Vietnam, which committed to export up to 1.5 million MT of rice. The NFA has so far signed contracts to buy 1.71 million MT out of an import quota of 2.1 million MT for the year.

The Philippines is the world's largest importer of rice this year.
