Philippines Claims Self-Sufficiency Plans On Track

Even with the ongoing global shortage of rice, the Philippines is hoping to achieve its target of around 92% self-sufficiency in rice this year and almost 98% sufficiency by the year 2010.

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo had earlier announced an ambitious multi-billion-peso plan to overhaul the country's agricultural sector to cope with the rising world price of food, particularly rice, which is the nation's staple diet.
