Malaysia Offers To Buy Rice From India

By news desk on June 04,2008

Malaysia has offered to buy rice from India in order to build up its stockpile but India's central government is likely to wait till October harvest to decided on the proposal.

During a recent visit, the Malaysian delegation including chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Sabri Ahmad, had a meeting with India's Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar during the visit where he submitted the proposal to buy Indian rice.

The Malaysian government had earlier offered barter deals to India in order to build up its rice stockpile and has prepared a plan to offer palm oil in exchange for rice.

India, one of the world's largest palm oil importers by volume, was the world's third-largest rice exporter until it imposed restrictions on overseas sales in October last year, triggering a rise in global rice prices.
