Malaysia Considering Rice Imports From Vietnam

By news desk on May 28,2008

The Malaysian government is considering a proposal to import rice from Vietnam as part of its efforts to create a larger stockpile and ensure ample local supplies.

The Malaysian government would prefer to purchase rice from neighboring countries, as freight costs would be higher if purchases were made from distant nations such as the U.S.

Earlier, Malaysia used to maintain a stockpile of only 92,000 MT equivalent to 15 days' requirements. The country imports around 27% of its annual rice needs and subsidizes the sale of some local grades.
