India: Domestic Rice Procurement Figures Improve

By news desk on December 28,2007

After lagging behind for most of the season, India's domestic rice procurement figures have recorded a significant increase as the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has managed to procure 119.27 lakh MT of rice during the current marketing season, which is marginally below the 120.78 lakh MT purchased over the corresponding period last year.

To deal with the domestic shortfall, the Government of India had taken several emergency measures, including a ban on export of all non-basmati rice in October this year.

With the export route closed the bulk of the surplus rice is now ending up in FCI godowns.
