India's rice exports in the marketing year to September
2007 are projected to total 4.0 million-4.5 million MT, down from 4.7
million MT a year earlier, a senior industry executive said Friday.

"It is impossible to give an exact projection of (rice) exports this year,
but they are likely to decline on high local demand and stagnant output over
the years," Anil Adlakha, executive director of the All India Rice Exporters
Association said on the sidelines of an international conference on foodgrains.

He said non-Basmati rice exports are expected between 3.0 million-3.5 million MT this marketing year, down from 3.6 million MT in the year-earlier
period.

Adlakha said Basmati rice exports are also likely to fall to around 1.0
million MT this year from an all time high of 1.1 million MT in the 2005-06
marketing year.
