The Indian government is aiming to produce 14 million MT of rice during the 2008-09 winter season compared with an estimated 13.62 million MT a year ago.

The government plans to increase the winter crop acreage by 2 million hectares to make up for a shortfall in the area under farming during the summer season due to lower rainfall and floods in certain parts of the country.

India produced a record 96.43 million MT of rice in 2007-08.
