According to the latest government released data, India's rice planting during the June 1 to Aug. 8 period rose to 25.11 million hectares compared with 23.46 million hectares a year earlier.

India's summer crop plantings mostly take place between June and September and are driven by the monsoon and pre-monsoon rains. India's monsoon rains revived in the first week of August after being below average in July.

The rains for the week ended Aug. 6 were 7% above normal levels, with rains spread evenly across the country, the India Meteorological Department said.
