India Jun 1-Jul 31 Rice Planting Up On Year

By news desk on August 04,2008

image

India's summer-sown rice crop was planted on 23.13 million hectares as of Jul. 31, up 11% from 20.76 million hectares a year ago.

India's summer crop plantings mostly take place between June and September and are driven by the monsoon and pre-monsoon rains.

Monsoon rains in India during Jun. 1-Jul. 30 were 2% below normal, affecting sowing of most of the summer crops. A major shortfall in rain was witnessed in central and peninsular India during the period, although rains in the region were better than the June 1-July 23 periods.
