India won't allow any trials for genetic modification of rice in those regions that grow basmati.

Basmati rice is famous for its unique aroma, grain length and cooking flavor and is grown only in small pockets of the Indian subcontinent, including Pakistan.

Following restrictions put on rice exports from the U.S. to the European Union due to the detection of genetic modification in long grain rice, concerns were raised about field trials of GM rice in India.
