Reports from the Burmese agriculture department in Rathidaung have revealed that rats have destroyed a large number of paddy fields in the mountains on the western Burmese border as well as some fields in inner Arakan State.

The farms that were affected are in Rathidaung Township, 20 miles north of Arakan's State capital, Sittwe. The mountain range connects with mountains along the border with Bangladesh.

Rats on the border area between Bangladesh and Burma are roaming in large groups looking for food, and have destroyed many mountain paddy fields along both sides of the border.
