Procurement of Boro rice in all 16 northern districts is progressing satisfactorily as the Department of Food (DF) with assistance of the joint forces has taken adequate steps to make the drive successful.
Senior DF officials said the government has fixed a preliminary target for procuring 6,93,319 tonnes of Boro rice and 1,04,976 tonnes of paddy by August 31 during the current season.
Considering success of procuring eight lakh tonnes of Boro rice last year, the DF has now been working for procuring over 8.28 lakh tonnes of Boro rice in the region this year.
As per the target, 5.44 lakh tonnes of Boro rice will be procured from nine districts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur and Joypurhat, the sources said.
The rest quantity of over 2.84 tonnes of Boro rice will be procured from other seven districts of Bogra, Naogaon, Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Natore, Pabna and Sirajganj districts by next August 31.
