Bangladesh has started receiving its first lot of rice from Burma after the two neighboring countries agreed to the export of rice in order to overcome Bangaldesh's domestic requirements.

Bangladesh is currently facing a rice shortage and the wholesale rice markets in the country are still in turmoil from record high prices. Because of the rice crisis, Bangladesh is now importing large amounts of rice not only from Burma, but also India and Thailand.

The World Food Program had also agreed to provide support in preventing a crisis by bringing in 500,000 MT of rice to Bangladesh. The WFP rice is expected to reach Bangladesh in the beginning of February, according to an official report.
