According to the United Nations and other humanitarian organization and aid agencies, total rice crop damage in Myanmar from Cyclone Nargis is estimated to be around 718,000 MT, including 585,000 MT in storage.

Cyclone Nargis tore through the Irrawaddy delta on May 3, killing tens of thousands and leaving up to 2 million homeless.

The country's military government has been criticized for risking an even larger death toll by restricting the access of foreign aid agencies that could coordinate disaster relief.
