Madagascar's rice farmers hit hard by cyclone

By Oryza News on April 19,2007

Madagascar is still reeling after being hammered by the sixth cyclone since late last year. The island's staple food source, rice, was particularly hard hit, and much of the crop was destroyed by flooding. Immediately after the latest cyclone, many villagers fled to the school for shelter. Now only Marielene and her 5-year-old daughter, Zafy, and a neighbor remain.

Indlala hit on March 15th and worked its way across the island. The flooded river has affected an estimated one-third of the people surrounding Maroansetra. Ninety percent of the villages were flooded and the stagnant water left behind will take a long time to recede.
